Drought

It’s been so dry so long
That the ground is cracked and brown
It looks as though there’s no water
In this God-forsaken town

There is no grass to speak of
The trees are hanging low
Almost like they’re cowering
To escape the suns menacing glow

No animals can be seen here
Moved on to greener pastures in more ways than one
And any that are left here
Are hiding in shadows to evade the sun

It’s hard to watch the storm clouds build
To watch them circle round your place
Not a drop of water falls from them
Then they’re gone without a trace

The days and weeks are long and hot
And extend to months and years
This once green place, a dust bowl now,
Could reduce a man to tears

But we keep on doing all we can
In the hope we’ll be delivered soon
When once again the clouds will build
And finally burst to deliver a monsoon

The first few drops they stir the dust
And there’s that earthy rain type smell
The kind that brings you warmth and hope
That this place will no longer resemble hell

The rain falls steady for days
The tanks and dams filled to the brim
The place transforms before our eyes
As the land slowly soaks it in

The ground swells, the scars erased
And it starts to look a lot like spring
Where traces of new life are abundant
Where before there wasn’t a single living thing!

Then once more this land’s reborn
And we carry on and rebuild again
Things haven’t been this good in years
And we bless the heavens for the saving rain

But in the backs of our minds we know
That we’ll face this battle once more
And the day will come where this heaven on earth
Will once again be scarred and sore.
