Driving While Tired...

I've heard that driving while tired is almost as bad as drink driving... And after yesterday, I'm inclined to agree.

Aaron and I left Deni probably around 8am, I'd had a solid sleep but for whatever reason, felt drowsy. Aaron had 3 hours of sleep in a fold up chair, so I let him snooze in the passenger seat...

I was drifting all over the place... kept telling myself I could close my eyes for just a second or two and it would be okay... Almost hit a cow... Drifted across lanes... It was horrible. Aaron woke up after a while and noticed me driving badly, kept poking me to keep me awake, and eventually said he'd take over.

So I got comfortable in the passenger seat and fell asleep.

Woke up an hour later to "F*CK!!!!" the sound of gravel crunching, and branches hitting the side of the car... Which isn't so bad, until you realise we were on the OTHER side of the road.... Aaron was still damn tired, must have nodded off, drifted across the right hand line, into the trees on the other side of the road...

We both realised how damn lucky we were to make it out of that without a scratch (well, the mirror got scratched and now all I can see is the ground, but hell, what a small price to pay). I ordered him to pull over, and we both had a power nap on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere, and later on I continued driving....

It really is scary to think what could have happened... Maybe another metre to the right... Or if a car had been coming in the other lane...

So to everyone, all those bullshit signs on the road about "Arrive Alive" and all that? Pay attention....

Re: Driving While Tired...

i would never drive long distances tired. but i drive home from work in the middle of the night tired but thats only a 30 minute trip. plus having the windows down and the radio cranked wakes me up a far bit.

Re: Driving While Tired...

i didnt sleep saturday night at deni, so come sunday morning when we packed and left i had had no sleep, got a lift to bendigo to get my car then drove from there to my house in west gippsland it was a long drive and coming through the city was the worst but atleast it kept me awake, once i hit pakky the old eyes were starting to close and the car seemed to like the other side of the road but i made it home in one piece, wont be doing that again for a while, will pull over for a sleep next time

Re: Driving While Tired...

Yes, you guys are very lucky indeed!

Not a month ago, I right off my beloved kingswood driving home from Sydney tired. 70ks' out of Albury and I fell asleep and hit a side railing. F*cked the side of the car. I was very lucky as I hit a white post to begin with which woke me up and allowed me to pull toward the road again. If that hadn't have happened I woulda fallen over 11 feet into a gully and more than likely not survived!

Re: Driving While Tired...

have had this happen to me a few times
1- was when i was driving home from fishing was gonna camp down there the night but it started to pur down rain and at 4am decided to jump in my ute and drive home bout 1km fro mhome my mate started yelling at me and i didn't even rilise what happened didn't even no i had fallen asleep he said my head hit the steering wheel thank god cause there was a nice driop offon the other side dotn rememebr it didn't even feel tired.

2 driving back fro tmhe rodeo the other day had only had half hour sleep got a fright with a bloke beeping his horn at me and then iwoke up rpoapply when i hit a bit pot hole and saw where i was heading luckily it was up and old airway strip just outta darwin.

3 again driving home from fishing was dead tired i felt me head drop this time so it was a bit better but would have eben messy due to the fact i had a 5.5m boat on behind me which was loaded up and weighed around 1200kg

most of the fishing trips i do are around 500kms return and do them in one night or day and night so usually get no sleep and if we run out of beer or red bulls it's all bad.
