Overheating problems

Hi to all out there,

I got a 93 XG longreach thats running hot (200 - 210 deg F) and thats at 80 kph, i have replaced everything to do with cooling, im even running it without a thermostate at the moment.
Is there anyone out there that has had a similar problem or any tips on things i can try? cause i cant work it out and its starting to me off about now.

Re: Overheating problems

Hiya Sponge,
Mind me asking whether or not you're on gas as well as fuel? I have a XF Falcon, and she runs on gas and petrol. I have noticed the ol' girl sometimes prefers it on gas,and when she's on fuel and the gauge is just under half a tank, she starts to get all hot and bothered! Once while I'd been driving a few K's,she looked to be going to blow her top...but when I stopped and checked under the bonnet, she was as cool as a cuey...go figure! Fords, gotta love 'em for their thermostat problems!!!!

So anyway,if you got gas...I suggest you run her on it...beats the hell out of me why it works, but it does!

Cheers mate....

Re: Overheating problems

a common problem with this and simular models is the narow tubes used in the radiator cores

ist question are you in a hard water area ie: r u using dam water or river water to fill up the radiator ??

there may be a calsiam build up in the tubes if this is the case ...!

i do a lot of outback charity bashes and i find some of the water out back is not suitable for washing in never mind puting in a radiator attachedc to an alloy head engine

i eventualy overcame my overheating problems by fitting a custom made 3 core radiator with larger diamiter tubes even on the hottest days i never get hot
also a little trick i have done to my EF falcon is i fitted a bonnet vent which allows the excess heat to vent out and thus it has lowered the under bonnet ( engine bay) temp by over 40C. my EF no longer cooks batterys at 12 month intervals ( nothing else changed only added vents

Re: Overheating problems

Cheers for that, i am in the process of getting a new custom made alloy radiator for it because that is the only thing i havent yet replaced with the cooling system and if that dont fix it then puck knows what ill do but we will get round it one way or another, i have no choice really i use the car every day for work and the girl is gettin shitty about all the slow trips down south to Adelaide.
So thanx again peoples.

Re: Overheating problems

I have had the same problems over the last 6 months. Was running about 180-190 F and when I stopped it started to rise further.

I replaced the water pump (6 months ago) as the bearing was stuffed. Recently changed all the radiator hoses, thermostat, put a recovery cap and bootle on the overflow, flushed the radiator and block every few weeks. But nothing was making a difference and the radiator looked half decent.

So the other day I booked it into the radiator place. The core was a little rotton but not too bad. Would have lasted another summer probally. So new radiator went in. The temp guage was still running high. So out come the laser gun on the engine and the temp guage was out by about 20 degrees C.

So put a new temp guage in and now the guage is finally reading low sits on about 85-90 degrees C and dosent move. YAY!!!

So you are all probally cacking yourselves about now but I trusted my guage, but on the up side shes gonna run cool for a while now!!! So get your guage checked if something is presistantly worng especially with aftermarket guages.

Re: Overheating problems

if you have changed everything in the cooling system, then its worth looking into what generates the heat source, ie, plugs too hot, running too lean, etc..
