Question AU sedan boot/fuel buttons, can they be adapted to control lights etc in utes???

Gday,

ive got an AUIII ute and was just wondering if anyone knows if the two buttons on the dash on AU sedans to the right hand side of the steering wheel which open the boot and fuel can be installed in AU utes to control extra things like neons or a horn etc. I thought that perhaps the button would have to be held in for the current to continue to pass through rather than just a single push on push off type thing.

any help or info you could provide would be great. thanks.

Can’t say I know about the AU buttons, But the first question I would ask is are they electrical or mechanical, If they are electrical then I would guess that they are momentary action, IE the switch is only closed when you press the button. If they are than all you would need is a latching relay. A latching relay is just like a switch, a soon as it gets a pulse it latches from one state to the other. You will also need a relay as the AU switches themselves will not be capable of much current. For spotties or neon I would use as big a relay as I could get 100A if possible, at leas then you are unlikely to run out of power on your as you add other stuff in the future.

I would also change the current source for the AU switch from the battery to the ACC circuit, that way spottiest can’t be turned on without a key in the ignition and they would switch off when you turn the ute off. ( I leave my lights on in my Ute all the time, My Subie turns them off automatically and my Mazda has an idiot warning for lights on.

For Horns just use normal relay ( air horns can use a fair bit of current)

Don’t for get a fusible link close to the battery on your supply line.

Good luck

U gotta watch out with that coz they could be used to switch the controls in the computer but what you can do is find the plugs that attatch onto the back of the plug on the harness and create ur own by chopping of the plug (give ur self enough to solder onto) tape the loose wires up against the harness and just run the wires from the plug to the relay

They will probably be just a push button switch : ie they only allow current to pass while they are being pushed so if you used them to run your lights they'd only be on while you hold the button down (like horn wiring).
That said they'd be good for running a relay for musical air horns (cheers you just gave me an idea for me RTV).
Have you thought of using the power to your demister on ya back window to activate a relay, that'd work with lights, i'd just unplug it from the demister so it doesn't still heat the window up.

yeh thats what i was thinking, if i cant find some way to wire them up to lights then ill just fab a new switch for the lights and use the momentary buttons for a musical horn, could even have two different horns since there are two buttons.

They work well for auxillary horns. I had a spare switch panel so chucked in the oldmans XH with the horn on fuel flap and the boot release is setup as a flasher switch for the park light circuit.
Not sure if the AU used them, but for a factory looking light switch you could use the aerial hi-lo switch. 2 position switch mounted to the left of the steering column.
