Hey, I have a HQ tonner with a torana straight 6, 3.3L red engine in it and i want to know if it is possible to increase the power of the engine. The crankshaft has been replaced with weighted crankshaft as it had to pull a caravan half across Aus. If there is any recommendations it would be appreciated, also it still runs the leaded fuel and i was wondering roughly what the costs are to convert it to unleaded. I've seen and heard 202 engines that sound really good so i dunno if i could get this one to sound meaner and i would like to install power assisted steering could i get an estimate on the price involved in that and to replace the tray with a wooden tray any price range?, but yeh any suggestions would be great
Thanks Alistair

Re: Straight 6 needin' speed

You can actually run a 186 head on the 202 block, which increases your compression, but it would be wise to talk to a mechanic first.....As for unleaded just get a valvelube kit which cost about $60 and it hooks up to inject the liquid straight into the carby....Most auto places sell them

Re: Straight 6 needin' speed

yea ive known people to run a 202 block with a186 head, or even 186 blocks with 161 head. if you could get your hand on a 186 engine i would!! i had a mate with a 186 that was worked and it was un real! they are also a strong engine, but for the 202 you could always thro a holey350 on it, with a manifold to suit. put a lumpy cam in it, bore it out if you reali wanted too, how much extra u'd get im reali not sure it its worth it or not.

for sound.. i had a blue 202 which i think sounded grouse n was reali loud!!! i jst ran extractors into a 2.5" pipe thro a small hotdog that then split in to twin 2.5" then in to 3" tail pipes. had a nice crakle, and was extreamly loud for a 202.

Re: Straight 6 needin' speed

The Grunt Hunt articles in street machien for 202 was pretty good

Find used cars and new cars online - CarPoint Australia - CarPoint Australia -- Link to grunt hunt SM article

Making a 202 brether better will be the best route, Extractors, carby then cam, and decent rockers, A head job or yella terra head but both of those are hexy...

Re: Straight 6 needin' speed

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
I never thought id say it as i tend to do things differently from the crowd but you could probably just throw a chev in it cheap as chips, when comparing to pulling big power from the six. Depending on how much your after out of it.
Even an old 253 or 308 if your working to a budget and just want a few ponies.

Alistair, Im also in the process of replacing the steel tray on my HZ with a wooden one.
As to the construction of the tray, it depends on what you want to do with it. In my situation Im mainly using wood because it looks good, and (in my case) was chaeper than chequer plate.

I got the steel from the local steel shop, and pulled the boards (jarrah and whitegum I think) up from the floor of an old house on our farm. As for the finish of the boards, i guess you will want them shiney.
It cost me a couple of hundred ($220 I think) for the steel, but you could get that down a fair bit if you dont want much load carrying capacity of the tray. In other words, I used heavier section on it as I'm going to use it for carrying loads etc. If you just want it for looks, you can use thinner walled tubing.

I used 65x35x3 RHS on the outside- a bit of an overkill, (the steel place didnt have anything thinner) and 40x5 angle to support the boards. You could go down to 65x35x2 on the outside, or even less if you have good support in the middle. Because the members making up the perimeter of my tray were so thick walled, I incoroporated them into the main load-bearing structure of the tray, with the weight being distributed to the outside of the tray, then onto members running cross-ways to the chassis.

Another thing you might want to consider is that if you dont put much weight into the tray, you may find your back end losing traction, especially if you are going to work your engine.

As to your question about cost; my tray will cost me about $250, but that is not including labour (welding, stripping, painting etc, which Im doing myself.) or the cost of the boards. (which were free in my case- the white ants would eat them if i didnt take them!)
I f I was in your situation, I would budget for about $500. Take your time to work out the best deal. You might even be able to pick up a secondhand one.

I would attach a pic with this post, but cant find the lead that connects the camera to the computer.
Any other questions you have, Id like to help,

Cheers, and good luck,
Pete
