Notgood MY HZ IS DRIVIN ME CRAZY

Hi, look i have a hz ute its a 253. i had a hj engine in it when i got it and it was converted to pollution use with the engineers. i moved to singleton n.s.w and the engine that was in it ( it only did 2000 ks and it crapped out ) had to be turfed and i got a wb engine to go in it. now i keep having a problem that i just cant seem to fix! if its timed right it coughs and splutters, if it advanced it runs heaps better but the distributor pings like crazy, i have taken it to a mechanic here in town and he tells me i needed a new dizzy, so i got a new dizzy and she is still pinging like crazy when advanced, but it needs to be advanced to run smooth without surging. i am stumped at what to do! another mechie told me my harmonic balancer was shot but i got another oppinion and was told no-way. so does anyone have a suggestion? i have a 2800 k trip to do on friday and im kinda worried about drivin her that far with the ping or the surging. can anyone tell me if its safe to keep running if its pinging? or if its always surging? cheers.

thank you all, my reply and solution to this problem is below! thanks all again. cheers!

Re: MY HZ IS DRIVIN ME CRAZY

I got a a 202 highly modified and it does much the same. it ping or it coughs and splutters, It came down to a few things. one you need to adjust the jets on the carby. may need something a little smaller than the ones in it. 2 you may need hotter plugs. 3 the distributer may not be tuned correctly. you say its a blue motor. so it should have electric ignition. so point gaps are out of the question buyt new leads and coil may help. Pinging is caused buy the fuel ignighting to early. and the surging is from the fuel being ignighted too late. the only way to fix is to tune it. it a matter of finding that happy medium between ping and poo. if you find that it tunes great cold but gets rough once hot then it sounds like dirty valves. this is caused by it running lean and leaving carbon buildup on the valves. Hope this helps you. You may need to take a more drastic measure and do some head work. but thats a last resort

Re: MY HZ IS DRIVIN ME CRAZY

When you say new dizzy, did you replace the whole thing including vaccuum advance. To check if it is working properly unplug the vaccuum lead at the carby while you have the timing light hooked up to it. If you suck on the end of the lead the timing should advance. That will rule out vaccuum advance issues.
To check the harmonic balance (and from your description I really think this is the problem) turn the engine over until it is firing on one (use a screwdriver down the sparkplug hole to ensure piston is at top dead centre) and see if the timing mark lines up with the notch on the balancer. I think you'll find that the rubber bonding has failed on the outer ring allowing it to move a bit on the inner. This will then mean you will never get the ignition timing right.
There are a few other things that can cause the problems you describe but these two are the simple things to start with.

Re: MY HZ IS DRIVIN ME CRAZY

thank you all for your advice! i just cut my losses and put the ole girl on gas. i am currently paying off a gen3 for her at the moment, so i wont have these problems with the fuel injected engine. the vacum advance and everything passed an inspection my the new mechanic and he said it was fine, the harmonic balancer was a little dodgy, but after a tighten she was still doing the coughs. the new mechie is just as stumped as the last one so thats mexicanexpress ute 5, mechies 0! bugga. anyway, i drove my poor ole girl to deniliquin (900ks) and on the way she cost me 348 in unleaded, about 50 litres of water and 2 spark plugs. but we made it ( after 13 hours on the road from all the stoppin and startin ). we then decided to track down a gas system and someone who knows what to do with it! all up for the gas conversion it only costed me 200, thats the install and all the parts needed, its good to have mates in your hour of need! it cost 140 bucks to get home and no extra water, and 1 spark plug. so i am happy with that. the new engine should me in, in about 3 weeks and then hopefully all problems are taken care of(yeah right! its never that easy)anyway, thanks all.
cheers

also i forgot to say: the valve stem seals were RS! so they have now been replaced. it seems that everyone got the solution right in a way! bloody happy i asked ya's!

Re: MY HZ IS DRIVIN ME CRAZY

i tried a holley on mine, but it was a 750 holley and way too much fuel as expected was used. the holly ran blooooooody beauttttttiful as expected too. i also found out last night i need to buy a new fuel pump for the gen 3 thats going in, and that the engine is ready for me to pick up on friday! woohoo. so i hope to have the new engine in 1 week instead of 2 weeks. yeeehaaaw! and i have a 5 speed going in too, so it will be great getting back to the manual and getting rid of the ole trimatic! i have been offered a 2WD hilux ute, no engine or running gear included. so i was thinkin of putting the running gear from my hz into the hilux and doing the hilux up for show and shine. i will wait and see what happens, the guy also asked me if i wanna sell my hz to him and that will cover the engine, the hilux he's offerin me and 1000 cash, i said no straight away! i wont part with the hz at all, she has for sure grown on me and i couldnt part with her(thats been a statement i never thought i would say being an ex XF ford owner and lover, now i wouldnt buy another one after having this ute.not that there's anything wrong with owning one,"for the xf owners out there"
cheers ya'll

Smile Re: MY HZ IS DRIVIN ME CRAZY

It has nothing to do with the dizzzy actually. It all cames back to the octane of the fuel. If you run high octatane it will probably run heaps better and won't ping so much maybe even eliminate the problem. The old 253's were designed to run on super petrol not this unleaded garbage that we get now. My son had the same problem with his 253 and we traced it to the fuel. Now if he runs high octane fuel no problems, but some times he can't get the high octane and the problem comes back again.

Cheers

Re: MY HZ IS DRIVIN ME CRAZY

Speaking of the harmonic balancer, ive found that the one on my red 202 moves a bit on the crankshaft; If I grab a hold of the fan (while the engine is stopped lol), I can turn it about 10mm (measured on the outside of the balancer). That's not good, right? Anyone with any ideas... can i fix it or do i have to pull it off and replace it?
Thanks for any help anyone...
