A man driving a ride-on lawnmower was killed today when he was hit by a wheel which flew off a truck along a busy freeway in Melbourne, police say.
The 52-year-old man was mowing the grass verge alongside the West Gate Freeway when he was struck by the wheel which had come off the passing truck.
The man, from Rockbank in Melbourne's west, was a contractor for the state's road authority VicRoads, according to Victoria Police.
The accident happened when a wheel dislodged from the driver's side of a truck travelling inbound along the West Gate Freeway, just before the West Gate Bridge.
The wheel travelled about 225 metres and bounced off various objects including the median strip and a tree before hitting the man.
A Metropolitan Ambulance Service spokeswoman said the call-out was received at 1.30pm (AEST) but the man was dead when ambulance officers arrived.
Police closed the off-ramp before the West Gate Bridge on the Geelong side of the freeway for several hours while they conducted their investigation.
A spokesman from WorkSafe Victoria said the safety authority would investigate the incident.
The driver of the truck was treated for shock at the scene.
The 52-year-old man leaves behind a wife and children, the Ten Network reported.
A police spokesman said a report would be prepared for the coroner.
The accident takes Victoria's road toll to 229.
