Exclamation Perfect Storm?

Weather bureau warns of 'perfect storm' in WA

Forecasters are predicting Western Australia's first cyclone of the season will create a once-in-a-generation summer storm that will hit inland areas in the south of the state tomorrow.
Cyclone Isobel is expected to generate winds up to 120 kilometres an hour but little damage as it crosses the coast between Port Hedland and Broome in the north-west later today.
But the cyclone is predicted to weaken rapidly and be drawn in a low pressure trough over the Goldfields and Gascoyne, creating a massive 'perfect storm' that will move south.
Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Grant Elliott says areas such as Lake Grace, Raventhorpe and Esperance should prepare for severe storm conditions tomorrow.
"Very heavy rainfall - 100 to 150 millimetres near the south coast," he said.
"We're expecting some quite exceptional winds on Thursday, perhaps reaching 100 to 120 kilometres per hour, so there'll be localised damaging winds and the risk of quite significant livestock losses with the combination of rain and wind producing hypothermia."
It has been the driest year on record in WA and farmers in the state's inland areas are being warned of the risk of torrential rain and flooding by the giant storm.
Port Hedland State Emergency Service (SES) local manager Derek Jones says it has been raining heavily since early this morning and some streets are starting to flood.
Mr Jones says SES volunteers are on stand-by with sandbags if the flooding worsens.
He says winds are only reaching 50 kilometres per hour and are not causing any damage.
"I think we'll get some reasonable showers of rain today and we'll just keep an eye on it and hopefully it won't go on for too long, which will cause problems for us but we're all a bit grateful about having a bit of rain."

Quote:
TOP PRIORITY FOR IMMEDIATE BROADCAST
of SEVERE WEATHER WARNING
for Widespread Damaging Winds, locally destructive and Local Flooding.
People in in the southern Goldfields, Southeast Coastal district, South Coastal
district, eastern parts of the Great Southern and western Eucla.
Issued at 11:25 am on Wednesday 3 January 2007

A deep surface trough currently over the eastern Goldfields and Gascoyne is
likely to combine with the remnants of a tropical cyclone to produce a deep low
pressure system over the southern Goldfields and far eastern SW Land Division
overnight and Thursday, with the low weakening and contracting southeast during
Friday.

The deep low is likely to cause widespread damaging winds, locally destructive,
and could result in significant damage or destruction of property. Significant
beach erosion is also likely between Albany and Israelite Bay.

The deep low is also likely to produce unseasonally heavy rainfall over the
southern Goldfields, western Eucla and eastern SW Land Division during Thursday
and may lead to local flooding. Falls may be as high as 100mm over the 24 hour
period to 9am Friday.

The FESA-State Emergency Service advises that people should secure loose objects
and stay indoors when strong winds develop. Boat owners should ensure that small
craft are securely moored. Driving conditions may be hazardous.

Yeah Albany has got severe weather warnings. expected to get up to 4 inches of rain. So could be interesting. we are due for a huge storm down here and i reckon this one might be a good one!!!! Not looking forward to it. gutters are chockablock of crap and wont be able to withstand that much rain. Ah well. Too late now. its supposed to hit tonight!

Re: Perfect Storm?

Let us know what the storm is like if your in the vicinity!

Quote:
Cyclone weakens but WA braces for 'perfect storm'

There have been no reports of damage from cyclone Isobel, which crossed Western Australia's northern Pilbara coast this afternoon.
The category one cyclone has been downgraded to a low pressure system after it hit Eighty Mile Beach, located almost halfway between Broome and Port Hedland.
Emergency services are now preparing for a massive storm that is expected to hit the state's south-eastern regions at 3am AWDT tomorrow.
Gale force winds and heavy rain are expected when the remains of tropical cyclone Isobel meet with another low-pressure trough, creating a once-in-a-generation 'perfect storm'.
Residents in areas around Lake Grace, Raventhorpe and Esperance have been told to prepare for severe conditions.
Farmers are being warned of the risk of torrential rain and flooding, following Western Australia's driest year on record.
Senior forecaster Neil Bennett says the combination of 100-kilometre winds and 100 millimetres of rain is very unusual.
"We're going to see a combination here of a cold front that's exceptionally strong," he said.
"We've not seen a cold front as strong at this for a long time through the Perth area and combining that with this tropical cyclone coming together at the right point to produce this system is very rare indeed."
The Defence Force has been placed on stand-by to assist those affected by the severe weather conditions.

The whole of the Goldfields copped a drenching - Leinster/Leonora/Laverton all got heaps of rain too (I was standing out in it for three days at Lake Maranda and then had to drive back home through the water to Kal) - so nice to see some greenery out there.

Well we ventured into Esperance today from the NE, definitley a job for the 4WD. I've never experienced so much water before, quite exciting but then just a pain in the bum really.

Re: Perfect Storm?

yeah especially when you're standing in it for three days helping pulling a road train out of a lake... bugger! And it was cold too - we had 44 degrees and hot sunny weather on 2 Jan ... next day was a cold 16 degrees, windy, rainy - what a contrast.

I was gonna drop in and see ya Melzy on the way home, but wasn't sure the road would be open still. Hopefully next time I swing by (which seems to be every week) I will be able to say g'day.
