Question sporting shooters?

hey, just a general question. ever since i started shooting (sporting and competitive clay target) ive been told to shoot with both my eyes open. i find this almost impossible because i end up seeing two targets. wondering what anyone else out there does.
I find the same with the microscopes in our labs, i have to close my left eye...

Re: sporting shooters?

Wouldn't you see 2 barrels though as well? They'd line up with the respective targets hey?

Re: sporting shooters?

i have shot for state and national in rifle and pistol, I have allways had one eye closed, its only when shooting with a scope (while hunting) you should have both eyes open, so u can see what is around before and during shooting your kill. I have also been a range officer for the Sporting shooters, where I taught new members on the range, I allways taught them to shoot with one eye closed.

I hope this has helped.

Re: sporting shooters?

yeh clay target ive shot several years now and always found it easier to have one eye closed, alot of the older shooters tried to teach me and they themselves shoot with both open.
yeh i see two barrels and two targets. I know alot of rifle shooters shoot both eyes open but it doesnt work for me, something to do with which eye is dominant im a right handed shooter but i think my left eye is dominant.

Re: sporting shooters?

yeh you on the right track there mate it is all about ur dominant eye, easiest way to check which is dominant is to look at somthin on the wall with both eyes open then close one eye then the other, wat ever your looking at will move wen you close your dominant eye... i got the same problem im left eye dominant but shoot off my right shoulder, apparently you should get the butt of your gun twisted so you can shoot with both eyes open because it gives you heaps better depth perception wen shootin a movin target like clays... or else you can just practice a hell of a lot with both open! i used to shoot with me left eye closed but nowdays i normally shoot with both open

you siad it nicko, thats how i was taut to shoot clays, but then, because i was tuat that way i probably find it easier than if id learnt with one eye closed. i still shoot one eye closed for rifles, but with a shotgun on an moving target i find it easier to track the target with both eyes open. it gives bigger field of view and better depth perception mostly.

Correct me if im wrong, but if you see two targets it means your focusing on the barrel rather than the target. you should focus on the target instead. i was taught to aim by straightening my arm and pointing to something, if you extended a straight line out from your fingertip, it would be right on where you aimed. so you need to apply that principle to the gun barrel, that it points where your focused, to do that you need both eyes open.

its alot easier to explain in person with a gun in my hands, so if that didn't make any sense i appologise.

Re: sporting shooters?

yeh i understand ya. i think rifle shooting before i started clay target caused me to develop that habit, doesnt affect my shooting i dont think, just interesting to see how it works for other people. hmm havent shot competitive now for a year or two but i got my licence now so as soon as i pick up a cheap gun (anyone??) ill get right back into it...
