Rep Power: 10 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | This is Real! Members are advised to exercise caution when responding to a missed call from unfamiliar numbers. The latest mobile spam involves the receipt of a missed call notification from either a Melbourne (8558 1444) or Sydney (8219 0500) number, which prompts recipients to return the call before realising it is unsolicited spam mail. When returning the call, callers are greeted with a recorded message from DC Marketing telling them they have been ‘selected to collect an amazing gift with a value of at least $40’. All they have to do is call a 190 number—at a cost of almost $3 a minute or more from mobiles—to get their individual winner’s code and also be in the running for up to $10 000. There is no clue as to what the ‘gift’ is. Only once the 190 number is called do you find out the gift is a collection of ringtones designed to increase sales. The catch comes after the free ringtones have arrived, when you need to opt out or face a continuing subscription for ringtones costing $4 a week.

| Re: MOBILE TELEPHONE SPAM I received an email about it the other day..... here are the numbers that were listed in the email......... BE ALERT... IT IS HAPPENING... People are being targeted by a mobile phone call back scam. The scammers* call the mobile then hang up before it is answered. The scammer then relies on the curiosity of the phone owner to call the number back to find out who was calling. If the number is called a recorded message tells the caller that they have won a prize and/or they are directed to phone a 1902 number which has a call rate of around $3 per minute. Numbers that have been identified as belonging to these phone scammers include: 02 8404 2235 02 8404 2296 02 8219 0500 02 8303 8320 03 8102 9565 03 8558 0556 03 8558 1441 03 8558 1442 03 8558 1443 03 8558 1444 03 8558 1445 03 8558 1446 03 8558 1447 03 9540 2950 03 9540 5101 03 9540 5189 If you receive a call from one of these numbers do not call back. There is no prize, just a hefty bill. If someone calls you and you're not available chances are they'll leave a message saying who they are and why they're calling. * apparently the scammers are actually a registered Australian marketing company & are not doing anything illegal so there is nothing the ACCC can do to stop them. | |

| Re: MOBILE TELEPHONE SPAM Well for the last 2 weeks we have been getting phone calls (on our landline) off similar numbers but i wasnt here for the first few times they rang, so i rang back coz i thought it would be about a few jobs i applied for. But once i rang back one was engaged and the other had a computer message saying that the phone call is important to them and to stay on the line... so i did.. after 5 minutes i hung up and dad said not to ring again coz it is most probly a hoax. Now that i have heard it ring they only allow the phone to ring twice then hang up.. And we have a private number.. And not all that many people know it. The numbers are (02) 89154600 and (02) 81983800 We havenyt got the bill yet so i dont know if they have charged us anything or not.. But im guessing they have.. Does anyone know if there is a website you can go into and let people know of these numbers or someone we can ring???

| Re: MOBILE TELEPHONE SPAM I only return calls when I know the number, If I don't know it I just leave it and if the reason the person called is important enough they will ring back. If any tries to ring me and I don't return the call because I don't know your number or you have changed it keep trying to call I will answer. A lot of the time when I am at work my phone is out of range, there are not too many places where a phone works in the Pilbara. | |
