Question Private Health Insurance

Who has Private Health Insurance here?

Do you recommend it, or just stick with Medicare?

Cheers

Re: Private Health Insurance

Yep, always had it, hardly ever used it que sera sera.

I also let my wallet make the descision when it comes to policies. As my circumstances change i change my cover type and shop around for the best one, i reckon i'm on my 7th or 8th different mob in 30 years. Currently use HIF which gives me the best deal. Certainly a lot cheaper than HBF or Medibank Private.

Re: Private Health Insurance

Yeah got private health for a couple of reasons, Firstly for the tax bracket im in i get drilled for the medicare levy and the only way to get that down is to have private health which you can claim on tax anyway. So you may aswell get a benifit out of your money.
Secondly depending on your cover you can get all sorts of good benifits including private rooms, dental, eyes etc,etc and also you get st johns ambulance cover which i hope we wont need to use but is always handy to have out bush

Re: Private Health Insurance

Private Health Insurance, whilst hideously expensive these days, is well worth it.

Just be wary of the Ambulance Cover that a lot of insurers provide. You'll find in the small print that they'll only cover one a year, or non-emergency transport only. And when you consider that a Priority 1 in WA costs a little over $500 it's not cheap.

The best way around that is to get Ambulance Cover directly from St John Ambulance. Last I checked it's about $50 a year for a family, so it's not like it's overly expensive.

Re: Private Health Insurance

Definitely have private health insurance - only way to go! Billy, you would be eligible for Defence Health (the one that I am with) and they are really good. I have never had a problem with any claims and can claim for a whole heap of different things with the top options cover.

As a single person, it will cost you approx. $100 a month (thats with the 30% rebate already taken off) but I can assure you by the time you go to the dentist a couple of times a year plus anything thing else you need (glasses, acupuncture, etc) you have definitely got all of your money back plus more.

Re: Private Health Insurance

Yeah i Have it and i always have it a saviour i spent a night in hospital last year for tonsilitis and then had to have at least thirty follow up appointments at the hospital the specialists and the doctors... if i did not have private health cover it would have eaten through practically my whole savings but because i have it there was hardly any cost at all

Re: Private Health Insurance

Nope don't have it. Do have ambulance cover tho. I spend a small fortune on medical, averages to about $100 a week, with dr, specialist, mri, prescriptions etc. I see specialist privately but when ever I need surgery go to public hospital. Waiting lists can be a pain but if its urgent you still get in and still get good treatment. I was into Charlies neurosurgery dept within 2 weeks of diagnosis and could not say anything bad about treatment received. If you have heart problems RPH is still considered the best hospital in Perth. If I wanted to take out private now it wouldn't be worth it as I have been told they won't cover pre-existing medical conditions, which mine obviously are.

Re: Private Health Insurance

I have ambulance cover only. Dad got it for us. And while dad was in Victoria recently he got a kidny stone and called them. (thinking he was covered) and he got a 2300 bill because it wasnt classed as an emergency. Its bullshit. Dad wouldnt ring unless it was an emergency. And dad has had kidney stones a million times before and he's need operations 2 get them out b4.. so to dad it was an emergency..
