Re: counselling

Hey metal mickey,
I had issues last year which I had trouble dealing with.My GP suggested counselling, and I was nervous about going, however it was quite helpful and not what I expected. The counsellor is very understanding and is there to help. They are easy to talk to and dont judge you, that was my experience.I ended up having about 6 or 7 sessions,it really helped me.
All the best, Cheers.

Re: counselling

Hi Ron,
Ive had counselling for depression before. I didnt want to open up and talk about it but I relised if I wanted to help myself I would have to tell them about my problems.

Good luck mate.

It is great that you have made the decision to get some one on one therapy Mickey.

Basically it is nothing to be ashamed of, nor scared of, but it is fair to say that you will feel those feelings and be apprehensive, but it does help mate to make that next step.

Probably what will happen is that the counsellor will probably start from scratch, but do it slowly, such as asking you about your childhood, your family, your upbringing, your alcohol intake, what hobbies you enjoy, your friends, your future goals, what makes you happy, what pisses you off, what triggers your depression, what makes your depression worse and what makes it better.

Are any of your parents ex-service people, such as army, navy or airforce? Or Veterans? Cause if they are you can get free counselling through Vietnam Veterans

Its up to you to speak out to the counsellor, and there is no need to hide anything, but there is no rush for you to tell everything straight away.

Listen to me Mickey, I have been there mate, for years on a weekly basis I saw a psychologist, I made the most of it, also I was in the Defence Force, and it was free, which was good, and definately helped.... but depression takes time to cure mate, it may feel like one day your cured and you will feel great, and then the next day you are back in that dark hole ... you need to expect the good days and the bad days.

You need to set yourself goals, I set myself goals on a daily basis, each day I try and set myself a goal to do, such as gardening, learning stuff, working on my ute, taking up new hobbies, such as I have recently with metal detecting which is great.

The biggest tip I can give you is to do things which take your mind away from depression, because if you are active mentally, your forget about depression and loneliness and all the other things.

Please set yourself goals, and it is so good that you are not afriad to discuss your depression without fearing the stigma associated with it, and its also so good to see all your BeautUtes.com friends giving you the support that you deserve.

Keep it up Mickey!

Re: counselling

Mickey, I've been going to a phsycologist for about a year and a half now and I can honestly say, its been so good for me.
About a year ago my life just fell apart, I had nothing to look forward to, I guess I was depressed, everything was going to shit and mum forced me to go to a pshyc. She tried it a few years ago when I was about 16 and it was a nightmare, totally didnt click with the lady and bailed after 2 sessions. This time she got me to try another lady and I clicked fantasticly with her. She's been there to talk to when shit goes wrong with my parents, when I went thru a nightmare breakup, when I lost my job etc, and I can walk out empty of all the stuff going round in my head.

I cant recommend it more if I tried, but if it doesnt feel right after two sessions, look around for another. If you dont click you wont want to open up and talk about everything.

Best of luck mate.

Re: counselling

Our family had a couple of sessions after my mum died, helped a lot!
You've just gotta spit it all out! They're there to listen and help, so make sure you tell them whats going on.

Re: counselling

Hey Mickey if u can get into a counseller mate make the most of it, ive been trying for 2 months to get help after i realised ignoring things about seeing someone die in front of me wasnt going to fix the problem ive since been pushed from piller to post and constantly stuffed around i spent nearly 2 hours sitting in a medical clinic yesterday waiting for my appiontment before i had to tell them to just cancel it because i had to go back to work, i think its a sad state of affairs when our medical system is pushed so far that ppl are having to wait 2 hours for their appiontment which has been pre booked for weeks and it really does make me wonder how many ppl who like me have admitted that they desperatly need help are getting pushed aside because although its definatly not the case for me i can see how some ppl get lost and give up when help like this is hard to get.

All i can say mate is go in there and tell them everything because i can honestly say i would give up a fair bit at the moment to get the chance to get that help.

Best Wishes

Re: counselling

Ron, that is the best news I have ever heard. Congratulations and good luck. Take it from, talking about your fears and problems is the best thing you can do to help yourself.

Re: counselling

Ron as far as i'm concerned you've just done one of the best things you can ever do.

I had a few counselling sessions about a year ago to sort out a lot of things in my life. I had a lot of anger issues, resentment to my father (ok i still got that but thats why me n him dont talk much) and depression. It really helped me get my life back on track, i went to tafe, made new mates, stop drinking so much and yeah felt a helluva lot better.

Cheers mate and best of luck!

Matt
